In this easy tutorial I will show you how to make a burlap tablecloth in 5 easy steps!
I’ve recently updated this tutorial to give you EASIER-to-follow instructions!
I’m always spotting tablecloths like this at home stores like Pottery Barn. They make such a great backdrop for vignettes and it gives such a nice texture to the room but you can’t seem to buy them anywhere. They only use them for store display tables. I decided to get myself some burlap and make my own! And it is very easy!! You can make this burlap tablecloth yourself in 5 easy steps!
SUPPLIES
- Burlap fabric {I bought mine at Fabric.com} washed and dried 2-3 times to shed all the loose fibres
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pins
TUTORIAL
1. Lay the pre-washed fabric on top of your table. Cut the fabric all around the table edge making sure to add 1 inch extra for seam allowance.
2. Next, pin the side panel around the top piece of fabric. It’s okay to cut your fabric to make it fit around the circumference of your table. Just be sure there’s enough fabric to cover to the floor plus 2 inches for hemming.
3. Sew along the edge you just pinned. It doesn’t need to be turned inside out. If you have seams, cut away excess fabric and sew the seams together.
4. Next, turn the tablecloth inside out {meaning stitching turned inside now} and iron seams down. Measure the length and add an extra 2 inches for the hem. Then cut all around the bottom.
5. Hemming: Fold over 1/2 – 1 inch and iron into place. Fold over another 1/2 – 1 inch and iron into place. Stitch the ironed hem and you’re done!
I love how it turned out!!
And because it’s in my foyer, it goes well with every season of the year.
Let me know if you decide to make a burlap tablecloth!
Have a great week!

I am curious how the straight drop fits the round top?
Hi Denise,
Once the circle fabric is cut for the top, the rest of the fabric is pinned along the top. Any extra is trimmed and hemmed. Hope that helps!
